Basic Requirements

Applicants for certification and registration as an Applied Science Technologist (AScT) or Certified Technician (CTech) under the Applied Science Technologists & Technicians Act & Regulations of British Columbia requires both academic training and experience. The minimum academics required for AScT certification is a Diploma of Technology (2 – 3 years post secondary training) from a nationally accredited program or equivalent. The minimum academics required for CTech certification is a Technician Certificate (1 – 2 years post secondary training) from a nationally accredited program or equivalent.

 

AScT and CTech certification requires the applicant to have a minimum of two years of related work experience, with at least one year at the level of certification.  In addition, one year of the work experience must be in Canada. Internationally trained professionals may qualify for ‘Provisional’ membership provided that the foreign academics and experience are acceptable. Reclassification from the ‘Provisional’ status is possible after the one year Canadian experience is achieved.

Applicants who do not meet certification requirements may be granted membership as an Associate, GradTech or Student.

 

Individuals who have already achieved Certification and Registration as a Technologist or Technician in another provincial jurisdiction may apply for transfer of their credential under the terms of the Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT) or the BC/AB Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) - Transfers under AIT/TILMA.

Application forms for registration in ASTTBC are available from the ASTTBC office.

If you are a full-time student or have graduated within the past six months from a technology program, please complete and submit our student application form.

Internet-based application submissions are not supported due to the numerous attachments and supporting documentation that must accompany an applicant's submission.
